HONG KONG-Yung Kee Restaurant



I was in Guangzhou for a study mission and we decided to pop by Hong Kong for a day trip. I like how easily you can travel from Guangzhou to Shenzhen and then to Hong Kong. The ease in transportation makes my two weeks in China worth it.

My prof who is a local recommended Yung Kee restaurant for an early dinner before we catch the train back to Guangzhou. We were there around 5.30pm and lucky for us, there was minimal crowd and we got our tables and orders quickly. Hence, I do advise you to go earlier to avoid time wastage.

The restaurant ambience was moving along the posh Chinese concept style with excellent service. It was one of the best dinner I had for the entire trip (we were on a budget trip). So, if you are visiting Hong Kong, please spare some time to dine in here; especially if you are here with your family. The dishes are expensive but worth every penny. I will introduce two "must-try" dishes.

Phenomenal Roasted Goose
Mouth-watering roasted goose with superb presentation
While tripadvisor seems to garner mix reviews with a handful of them expressing that the goose was not as yummy as the last time and standards had dropped. However, as a first time customer; and someone who isn't a fan of goose, I truly enjoyed it and found myself grabbing for more.

Hot sauce poured over right before being served
The roasted skin was aromatic and crispy while the layer of fats just beneath the skin has a nice smooth texture that melts in your mouth. The meat was also tender and juicy with a splash of sweetness and saltiness. It must have been the sauce that was poured over the roasted goose right before being served. On top of that, the presentation alone makes your mouth water. No doubt the best roasted goose I have ever tasted. Of course, not everyone might agree. Hence, if you have tried a better one, do leave me a comment. :)

All in all, I would give it 5 out of 5. If what I had tasted was a drop in standard from the previous years, then that roasted goose must have been heavenlyyyy. Go give it a try when you are in Hong Kong and go as a group to save on the cost. I can't recall how much this plate cost but browsing around concludes that half a bird cost HK $240 (approx SGD 40) and a serving size for 2 costs HK $120.

Silky Braised Bean Curd with Bean Sprout


Although it may seem like a simple dish to cook, I guess the secret lies behind the freshness of the ingredients. It was soft and silky yet bouncy and melts in your mouth. The bean sprouts were fresh and it goes really well with the bean curd.

However, I felt it was overpriced for a bean curd dish. I would only recommend this dish for bean curd lovers. Maybe you should consider braised bean curd with assorted meat or strewed bean curd with shrimps.

Overall, I would give the dish 3.5 out of 5 for the hefty price tag.
